The philosophy of Botobolar’s Winemaker Kevin Karstrom is to work "with
nature not against it….grow and make premium wines without altering the
soil structure and develop the vineyard into something all can enjoy.”
Botobolar’s 22-hectare vineyard was planted in 1971 and organic
vineyard practices were utilised from the onset. Thirty-two years later
the vineyard is thriving producing some of the best grapes in the
Mudgee region. The major wine companies eagerly seek any excess grapes
they may have after their own production requirements are met.
After working at some of the wineries in the Mudgee area, Kevin and his
family decided to make Botobolar Vineyard their home. Buying the
vineyard in 1994 from the its founder Gil Wahlquist, Kevin has
maintained the organic practices that were established early on.
