DR KATE HUGHES
Campaigner, community advocate and writer, Kate Hughes has a lot to
offer the inquiring mind. Whether your concerns focus on today's
rampant consumerism and techno-dependence or is more concerned with the
fine details about pesticide residues in food and toxic chemical
overload, Kate's knowledge and commitment is as relevant today as it
was twenty years ago when she began her environmental campaign work.
Today her interests include industrial ecology, the growth of the
political elite, the illness-based "health system" and land and water
remediation. Kate is working with her family and friends to build a
cultural revolution that promotes common sense, modest lifestyles and
technological rationalism.
QUICK POISON, SLOW POISON; PESTICIDE RISK IN THE LUCKY COUNTRY by Dr Kate Short
Slow poisons do not obey the rules of mainstream toxicology which
predicts that there is a measurable no effect level of any given
poison, i.e. a threshold dose, below which no harmful effect is
possible. ……. This means that the impact of slow poisons is not as
dependent on the size and potency of the dose as is the case with quick
poisons. The crucial determinants of their power are different.
Quick Poison, Slow Poison remains as relevant today as when it first
appeared in 1994. This landmark book retains currency and will assist
people keen to understand the big picture about pesticide risk.
Remember: Pesticides are linked to childhood cancer and can make people
crazy. They are linked to asthma, chemical sensitivity and birth
defects. They poison the air, soil and water and despite the appearance
of heavy regulation, are still present in unacceptable amounts in much
of our food."Caring for our Children"
